DJ Mag: BODY & SOUL LONDON

Body & Soul in New York is like a religious institution. François K, Danny Krivit and Joe Claussell's Sunday parties are revered as a spiritual experience, where house and disco merge in a free spirited space of expression.

So when they rock up in London, you can be sure it is going to be a roadblock. Tonight, London promoters Need2Soul bought the three B&S founding DJs to Electric Brixton alongside Jocelyn Brown and her full band.

You may think it is brave to take such a big venue on a Sunday night, but when DJ Mag arrives at 5.30pm the queue is already snaking down the hill - the religious pull is just as powerful in London, it appears!

Inside the venue - which incidentally hosted the very alternative Top 100 DJs vibe the night before - is incredibly decorated - balloons float above the dance floor and the booth - stage centre - is emblazoned with the iconic Body & Soul emblem.

François K, Joe Claussell and Danny Krivit are warming the room nicely with disco cuts, funk, jazz, house and everything in between - true eclecticism from three masters in their field!

When Jocelyn Brown takes to the stage with her band the crowd - mainly in their 30s, all smiles and almost certainly with Monday off work - go into overdrive.

The original house music diva, works through a selection of her biggest house hits including 'Something's Going On', 'Somebody Else's Guy' and 'Keep On Jumping' - accompanied by the crowd, singing along to every word.

The evening climaxes with the return of François, Claussell and Krivit, who take the party through until 1am Monday morning.

Body & Soul don't come often enough. Big up to the Need2Soul crew for making it happen. The spiritual, soulful house vibes are alive and very well indeed!
